I know it has been a really long time since my last post - over two months! I have been very busy with work and trying to keep on top of household chores so I haven't had much time at all for sewing. I guess I'm still getting used to balancing leaving the house by 8:00am and getting home at 7:00pm but still having the energy to do something creative. I signed up to make this quilt for the Hands 2 Help Charity Quilt Drive the day before I started working, so I didn't know how exhausted I would be at the end of each day.<div><br><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0lPykzApJ71diG_uh83jomAo90zQDTni0e3_iHffq23Y4rQlCAypafUcy5RSTrlVhw_CgSggtIKXtLHTu0Phl6aSPkfnPV0SNjaHPIXw2v4rdpf3MoAJCofa-HIU2wlU60LFguoGRY1ZG/s640/blogger-image-1083869222.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0lPykzApJ71diG_uh83jomAo90zQDTni0e3_iHffq23Y4rQlCAypafUcy5RSTrlVhw_CgSggtIKXtLHTu0Phl6aSPkfnPV0SNjaHPIXw2v4rdpf3MoAJCofa-HIU2wlU60LFguoGRY1ZG/s640/blogger-image-1083869222.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>That being said, I am really glad that I pulled through and finished this quilt. I chose an easy pattern that I knew I would be able to finish, and actually this only took me a weekend to complete. It was really nice to get back into my sewing room, and I'm happy that my weekend efforts might bring a little happiness to someone who is going through more troubles than just trying to balance their work life with sewing time. Sometimes I take it for granted just how good my life is. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWKY5Eiw12iflWXrtF4SpRi9c7D8VAzwoGjN8K2wVjcg4dOpQ2lemsoLbX0OR6oz3lXVS0yK7TpXMAxDA_xIPfuBknn3FgNP76TNy54wnZfFLm2S17nY_VsPzyvDAJr_EbbKCr312eVWGR/s640/blogger-image-21329508.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWKY5Eiw12iflWXrtF4SpRi9c7D8VAzwoGjN8K2wVjcg4dOpQ2lemsoLbX0OR6oz3lXVS0yK7TpXMAxDA_xIPfuBknn3FgNP76TNy54wnZfFLm2S17nY_VsPzyvDAJr_EbbKCr312eVWGR/s640/blogger-image-21329508.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>This quilt will be going to the Quilts of Compassion charity which helps people dealing with disasters in their communities. I have never had to go through a natural disaster, but they seem to happen all the time now. I'm glad that this quilt might help make that ordeal a little easier for someone. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIMN_Nu7ADRm_Kxh6b-aeObwTYIjGfigHnvngCZscqdL15ULTq_A0lvRTnj0NFTY8NY6gZ6IJ6mBpugwTR6_A0s22yUrBNCC3VbIN-pKhRNCvNarAHl5h7NXcMcpqBv6dfqxIx1NKnLjwa/s640/blogger-image-1416972083.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIMN_Nu7ADRm_Kxh6b-aeObwTYIjGfigHnvngCZscqdL15ULTq_A0lvRTnj0NFTY8NY6gZ6IJ6mBpugwTR6_A0s22yUrBNCC3VbIN-pKhRNCvNarAHl5h7NXcMcpqBv6dfqxIx1NKnLjwa/s640/blogger-image-1416972083.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>All finished up it is 60" square. That seems to be my favorite size of quilt. It's great for cuddling if you're an adult and you can really tuck in a child with that size too. I also thought the pattern and colors would be OK for an adult or child as well since it's not too grown up but not too childish either. I did a different type of quilting in each of the colors and then a large stipple in the background. For the backing I used a fun teal print that kind of looks like dandelion flowers once they've turned to the white seeds. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglKLXKrn3QL61W7NY3jzr3DxJ0c7PVw_HyMQgSMgN8pFq4t1_3npeK7x_lXDFW6DWKJIX_GuqPPAyL9rMzCYLxssMb6XpgU8GLk85EWHMw6DgcQe2bmBD6uPhXQV5J8O8jxCXRcP4xCGYq/s640/blogger-image--1522916600.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglKLXKrn3QL61W7NY3jzr3DxJ0c7PVw_HyMQgSMgN8pFq4t1_3npeK7x_lXDFW6DWKJIX_GuqPPAyL9rMzCYLxssMb6XpgU8GLk85EWHMw6DgcQe2bmBD6uPhXQV5J8O8jxCXRcP4xCGYq/s640/blogger-image--1522916600.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>Anyway, thank you all for stopping in. I hope I keep finding time in my schedule to be able to complete quilts for charity. I have so much in this world, so it is important to me that I give some of that back while I am able. Have a wonderful weekend everyone, and happy quilting!</div></div>Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07978830891894756534noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9095270954916821266.post-11258042997449043342014-04-02T22:20:00.001-07:002014-04-02T22:20:26.180-07:00Auction Quilt FinishedHello everyone! I stayed up way past my bed time last night finishing this up. I needed to turn it in this morning so I was scrambling around at the last minute. My new job has left me with a whole lot less quilting time than I had a few weeks ago. <div><br></div><div>Anyway, here's how it turned out:</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgsXAqExi7bmkWXjSiScSLABxstkeI0BUq7liGWUc8JiAaIAtx0Kw4dTJ3eFRgcB5NyHX_QxJ58-7nAvOdhhy17Ol_ZSnGq_rRu9v9BhqjSriRzGsbocmmQpR6DC_XCyG2IHD27N4SQ55P/s640/blogger-image-462247310.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgsXAqExi7bmkWXjSiScSLABxstkeI0BUq7liGWUc8JiAaIAtx0Kw4dTJ3eFRgcB5NyHX_QxJ58-7nAvOdhhy17Ol_ZSnGq_rRu9v9BhqjSriRzGsbocmmQpR6DC_XCyG2IHD27N4SQ55P/s640/blogger-image-462247310.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>I really, really loved this quilt. It was so soft, probably the softest quilt I've ever made. I think it was because the pieces were really large so there weren't that many seams to make the quilt stiffer. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxzIhHAIfpkFWQZBFzDSe9OUoaQ9i9awbkMJMzBHhpXaaPS19E4Ib6kLvYHAnvp-pgukh7EiTVX6xyCihSRsZ8afH-s2hLH-p7uSQ-At2qOwqSWhhJEYQdook5_bluaZq0YVJ4US10PK2K/s640/blogger-image--765791846.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxzIhHAIfpkFWQZBFzDSe9OUoaQ9i9awbkMJMzBHhpXaaPS19E4Ib6kLvYHAnvp-pgukh7EiTVX6xyCihSRsZ8afH-s2hLH-p7uSQ-At2qOwqSWhhJEYQdook5_bluaZq0YVJ4US10PK2K/s640/blogger-image--765791846.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>I backed the quilt with an orange floral print. I love the juxtaposition of the orange and blue. It's one of my favorite color combinations. The orange binding gives you just a pop of that complimentary color on the front and then nicely frames the back. I really love it and am kinda sad it won't be staying with me. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicoGpZh_GtPXFRmHfj_9OH8G6ul6KEysOZ63Vak5wY27SA7DZBn6uJ3VoqJUo_AA6ipSfmRvr_8f9_c3cnoRV6LYtkPpJW8SbXCyW5LXS206WpipEp-iWl8TF4e8Cqzv_fl52vnzLQIi68/s640/blogger-image--1533997541.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicoGpZh_GtPXFRmHfj_9OH8G6ul6KEysOZ63Vak5wY27SA7DZBn6uJ3VoqJUo_AA6ipSfmRvr_8f9_c3cnoRV6LYtkPpJW8SbXCyW5LXS206WpipEp-iWl8TF4e8Cqzv_fl52vnzLQIi68/s640/blogger-image--1533997541.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>I did straight line quilting on the whole quilt. It was a pretty easy quilt job compared to some other free motion stuff I've done. Other than working through the night, it was very relaxing. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-YImqijmocxPMsPDEbd0pxGCVaeYildNGCO8C4SavHGtEmDjw-OogwlmVnjQkZ9TXmly-EWjG2amWTOfHqSJE-HE1AZW8YohWskdL_2FPn4ceoqkUTVTf3v9tTPYDs_Ed0yRgOHd-ONe-/s640/blogger-image-1663357108.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-YImqijmocxPMsPDEbd0pxGCVaeYildNGCO8C4SavHGtEmDjw-OogwlmVnjQkZ9TXmly-EWjG2amWTOfHqSJE-HE1AZW8YohWskdL_2FPn4ceoqkUTVTf3v9tTPYDs_Ed0yRgOHd-ONe-/s640/blogger-image-1663357108.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>I didn't want to put a fabric label on the quilt since I'm not sure who will bid on it and actually end up with it. They might not even know who I am since I don't know everyone at the school (in case you missed it before, I'm donating the quilt to a silent auction where the proceeds go toward our church's grade school). So, I made a little paper tag instead and pinned it to the quilt. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT-WfE6CP0Tj6-Zs7Dt1Mj453g0aGpvWQld0mIf1tgvstdzmuC8_uHEQL2VJzjxIJcYjAnAJ40fWhzGAeOcP9aQUk7Es37JwzoYW6-3mKif97e6g6-UEfFoJ8ksApQp0900qtpxPEflzNv/s640/blogger-image--437855062.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT-WfE6CP0Tj6-Zs7Dt1Mj453g0aGpvWQld0mIf1tgvstdzmuC8_uHEQL2VJzjxIJcYjAnAJ40fWhzGAeOcP9aQUk7Es37JwzoYW6-3mKif97e6g6-UEfFoJ8ksApQp0900qtpxPEflzNv/s640/blogger-image--437855062.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>Anyway, I love how it turned out and I hope it makes it's way to someone else's house that will love it just as much. Hello everyone! It's that time of year again. Time to sign up for the Hands2Help Charity Quilt Challenge!! Don't know what that is? Head on over to <a href="http://confessionsofafabricaddict.blogspot.com/">Confessions of a Fabric Addict</a> and Sarah will tell you all about it. Just click the link above to go to her blog or click on the button on my side bar for more details.<br />
<br />
My mother and I participated in this last year and it was so much fun. I know we all love sewing and making lovely quilts, but why not put it to good use and donate a quilt or two or three (or more) to a good cause and make not only yourself but someone else very happy. Last year I made two fish quilts for the Quilts Beyond Borders charity. One went to Europe and one went to Africa to orphanages. It was so much fun to design these and sew all the fish together, quilt them and then give them away. I'm hoping they made a couple of kids very happy.<br />

My mom outdid me and made 3 quilts herself: The first two for the Happy Chemo charity and the last one for the Quilts Beyond Borders charity. She put together the tops and basted them for me. Then I quilted them for her and she put the finishing touches on with the binding. It was really fun to collaborate together on these and to send them off when they were all done.<br />

You can read my posts about our finished quilts here if you'd like: <a href="http://www.therecipebunny.blogspot.com/search/label/Charity">Hands2Help 2013 Charity Quilts</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So, this year I'm going to help out again. I know I can make at least one quilt. I hope I can make more, but I don't know what my time going forward is going to be like yet. I am starting a new job tomorrow and won't really know how busy I'll be until I get going into it. This effort is important to me, so I'm going to make time to make at least one quilt. This year I'll be giving to the Quilts of Compassion charity. This charity helps people dealing with disasters in their neighborhoods. They need quilts of all sizes so it gives me the most freedom in pattern design and time. There are two other charities you can choose to donate to if you get involved. They are all detailed on Sarah's website.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I really hope you'll choose to help out. We all spend time quilting for ourselves or for gifts for our own loved ones, but I also think it is important to give to those who don't have the means to make a quilt for themselves or the people they love. Since I've been blessed with so much I feel it is part of my responsibility to share my blessings and talents with others. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
As an added bonus, if you sign up this week Sarah is having a giveaway for those who commit to just one quilt. The quilts need to be mailed off by June 13th. That's 3 months to get it done, and all through that time she'll have tutorials and guest bloggers and lots of ways to keep us all motivated with the challenge. So, with one more push, I hope you'll join us! :) Happy quilting everyone!</div>

So I'm a bit behind in making my friend Jason a baby quilt considering his son is a couple months old already... I had planned on making this quilt:<div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh849tTNjikMrqzuzIupOBIx9ZMBt2HPWSCni6W2nOLOYKTuCki9_zMT1jBGlRbTIs_jx65-l-ukVScQQfSEhvVr8jUzRfpiN0gGCaWsVsdrPvl1coXkIYP4PsfgGf4gm2sltGA1qCaPgn-/s640/blogger-image-1191274341.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh849tTNjikMrqzuzIupOBIx9ZMBt2HPWSCni6W2nOLOYKTuCki9_zMT1jBGlRbTIs_jx65-l-ukVScQQfSEhvVr8jUzRfpiN0gGCaWsVsdrPvl1coXkIYP4PsfgGf4gm2sltGA1qCaPgn-/s640/blogger-image-1191274341.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>I bought the magazine so I had the pattern. I went out and bought all the fabric since my brown and green selection is very slim. I washed all the fabric. And then I let it all sit. And sit. And sit. I just couldn't get motivated to do this project and I realized I just hated the pattern. Yes, it is adorable and I would love to have this quilt. But making it is another story. It seemed tedious and just completely un-fun. </div><div><br></div><div>I was watching tv one night and doodling on some graph paper when I came up with a quilt that I did want to make. I looked at it and thought, "that's what I'm doing for the baby quilt!" </div><div><br></div><div>I ironed all the fabric this morning and got to cutting. I just used the greens that I had bought and some white for the background. I put these together:</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqTP4XkxjMy1e6CQo6uZvFNpnpVwQWqgIZbX2k70zrn0ftSpukJqCCLMiglk4j946w-j8BgJsV2Ba-HVAvu7VPd7chZoHsEYE0p_td5GaVGYEncPKEokXgjgh_sevRqvXDELdQcEKtamqv/s640/blogger-image--78329793.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqTP4XkxjMy1e6CQo6uZvFNpnpVwQWqgIZbX2k70zrn0ftSpukJqCCLMiglk4j946w-j8BgJsV2Ba-HVAvu7VPd7chZoHsEYE0p_td5GaVGYEncPKEokXgjgh_sevRqvXDELdQcEKtamqv/s640/blogger-image--78329793.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>I love how easy the "no waste" flying geese method is. One large 7 1/4" square for the center and four 3 7/8" background squares give you four geese blocks measuring 6" x 3". Once I got these put together I cut the remaining background pieces and before I knew it the quilt top was completely done!</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI9HT-xPTz_0mcw7pXAx3TDv3cjd5J0pNQNIzDMBKXEbdqCpYNRT5pCEud7geY-e6WMINxpBQDUYlFoMY6_fHlLqXTW1_AcJFs5WA2SIVpNqmB28cyCIPv3O3Mzk6Twcc2LpjKo9BdpDTj/s640/blogger-image-1418750529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI9HT-xPTz_0mcw7pXAx3TDv3cjd5J0pNQNIzDMBKXEbdqCpYNRT5pCEud7geY-e6WMINxpBQDUYlFoMY6_fHlLqXTW1_AcJFs5WA2SIVpNqmB28cyCIPv3O3Mzk6Twcc2LpjKo9BdpDTj/s640/blogger-image-1418750529.jpg"></a></div><br></div>This is a lot of negative space for me. A lot. I've never had this much before and it's kinda freaking me out a bit. I think that I'm going to just straight line quilt this with some diagonal lines in white, but it will be so noticeable in that negative space. Now I'm thinking that I should have just made the whole top out of flying geese and no negative space to make the quilting easier. But... I looooove this quilt top and the look of it. So, I guess soon I will be getting over my fear of negative space. :) </div><div><br></div><div>Stay tuned!</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdkkzpsgCi70bWdrgiZlgGyqSjRmTgmnXKPwLW2549VrmJTPmC29aVlvDQHVDnvZaZY2wWlbZkMCBDzJGRuXIzfjY8hyzDpThLFIFgJlzKSDh87A_IrKyLRN_dO_lYMOoL5wwEQG7VtYC0/s640/blogger-image--1760708196.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdkkzpsgCi70bWdrgiZlgGyqSjRmTgmnXKPwLW2549VrmJTPmC29aVlvDQHVDnvZaZY2wWlbZkMCBDzJGRuXIzfjY8hyzDpThLFIFgJlzKSDh87A_IrKyLRN_dO_lYMOoL5wwEQG7VtYC0/s640/blogger-image--1760708196.jpg"></a></div><br></div>Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07978830891894756534noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9095270954916821266.post-58881665697114300032014-03-03T21:06:00.001-08:002014-03-03T21:06:09.558-08:00Auction Quilt FlimsyHello everyone! <div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Hello everyone! I've started a new project that I'm pretty excited about. I just signed up to make a quilt for a silent auction. The auction will benefit the grade school where I volunteer. So, I was looking at pictures of quilts online that might be easy to put together and I came across this one:</span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYhUW3py4Wv18rM_5VRIX5jqEBjezS5KzTZot36wU9sIjJdDR_ivl9j7n4ugiF-Z1oINNZZltU8FYaNHhiDlhEgWHM5EcT7AqxyKPZgEMuAdWpMQxUl76jG-eFWgBFUKCwqiLJcHkB7YEU/s640/blogger-image--801752331.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYhUW3py4Wv18rM_5VRIX5jqEBjezS5KzTZot36wU9sIjJdDR_ivl9j7n4ugiF-Z1oINNZZltU8FYaNHhiDlhEgWHM5EcT7AqxyKPZgEMuAdWpMQxUl76jG-eFWgBFUKCwqiLJcHkB7YEU/s640/blogger-image--801752331.jpg" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
You can find and buy the pattern here:</div>
<div>
<a href="http://www.designsbyloftcreations.com/2007/07/patterns-by-loft-creations.html?m=1">Sparkle Plenty Pattern</a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I thought it was super cute, but I wanted to change it up a bit. Here's the layout I came up with:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8W-upSSsGy-GMtz8sfRZJZtddjhzKBD89yOHlJ3W_Jb2BZr1Ez11izSSKpuFdg1A2tEYA_aapzjQeDrK0U6fA9ZS517Jf2ySUgO273cZphNSMsosx-g7tZkZTydlXKVEjtcwKGkkSCDc3/s640/blogger-image-1791926861.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8W-upSSsGy-GMtz8sfRZJZtddjhzKBD89yOHlJ3W_Jb2BZr1Ez11izSSKpuFdg1A2tEYA_aapzjQeDrK0U6fA9ZS517Jf2ySUgO273cZphNSMsosx-g7tZkZTydlXKVEjtcwKGkkSCDc3/s640/blogger-image-1791926861.jpg" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm still kind of playing with where all of the colors land, but I'm going to let it rest for a bit - let it soak in - before I sew all the rows together. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My plan is to only do straight line quilting on this one and to just echo the star shape. All done this should finish up at 60" square. </div>
</div>

I've been furiously working to finish my scrappy valentine quilt and I finished it with 2 hours to go here in Portland, Oregon. I really wanted to finish it before my husband came home from traveling tonight. It is now happily drying in the laundry and I'll be able to wrap him up in it when he gets home. <div><br></div><div>So, here se some pics of the quilt. If I remember, I'll try to add some pictures of it after it's dry. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ1YMltuhAX1j3aqEb4KoA0FpjwDcZCoCsv6Xv5Z7G1ASjZip2NJMzdO8suw-W0OVnJ9FdI0qIX6Pp7y-_oW0OrMwbIZXg0zi9fwAumRyLlklX7o-ESiROI_QSDxVrPTzT0Z_uNTZnh-SD/s640/blogger-image--287128935.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ1YMltuhAX1j3aqEb4KoA0FpjwDcZCoCsv6Xv5Z7G1ASjZip2NJMzdO8suw-W0OVnJ9FdI0qIX6Pp7y-_oW0OrMwbIZXg0zi9fwAumRyLlklX7o-ESiROI_QSDxVrPTzT0Z_uNTZnh-SD/s640/blogger-image--287128935.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>My cat Leia approves of the final product, even if she did ruffle it a bit as I was taking pictures. She desperately wants to snuggle on it. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgAUlw5-TwyXSzMeF5zmkE90q6Koq-aA4Ll8KW6ywT6ziCiBaNR6V2w1ifHkjkNMyIJ-ZcpXbVVV3P1UA9BYBG0n87sCPphbfThrXDTaU3eMbZA2Fj8EpXFyNls7cw9273WBgSA5azt8LT/s640/blogger-image-1754316601.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgAUlw5-TwyXSzMeF5zmkE90q6Koq-aA4Ll8KW6ywT6ziCiBaNR6V2w1ifHkjkNMyIJ-ZcpXbVVV3P1UA9BYBG0n87sCPphbfThrXDTaU3eMbZA2Fj8EpXFyNls7cw9273WBgSA5azt8LT/s640/blogger-image-1754316601.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>This is the quilting that I did in all of the large white areas. I hashed each area with my walking foot and then added some free motion, free-flowing circles. I was trying not to be too anal with getting them all to be the same size and perfectly shaped. It was bugging me a bit because I really do like things to be perfect. I just wanted them to be more natural as if I was doodling on the quilt. I didn't want this quilt to be too rigid. Luckily I'm not super great at uniformity with the free motion quilting yet, so I think it worked out nicely. ;)</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjEFyTQ74QhoD8iOCyPQqa0-xmCCJ4CygJNzPK7hgea-oRhOqpnzpDjS5fmU6eflbPAuXIlelfLCSvXD_dPMmgHOlm9PhD111rsNWtsPZgtKPFh4tT3o_4VSKyDRzwrHf1LVC4ZvE1y-Ar/s640/blogger-image--766674628.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjEFyTQ74QhoD8iOCyPQqa0-xmCCJ4CygJNzPK7hgea-oRhOqpnzpDjS5fmU6eflbPAuXIlelfLCSvXD_dPMmgHOlm9PhD111rsNWtsPZgtKPFh4tT3o_4VSKyDRzwrHf1LVC4ZvE1y-Ar/s640/blogger-image--766674628.jpg"></a></div><br></div>In the smaller white areas I did that same circle design around the edge and left the center empty. In the black and gray star pieces I did some straight quilting from the center out. In the heart I just wanted to keep it simple. It is hard to see, but I just did one large FMQ heart in the middle. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWG-9MzfoyecEH_eAl39SLnQQy9h7RutLC4d4Ceko6ug8Zkthv_Zomun0dIeMzcfgbDighz1XvAuh0vL0xKwbodnIm2r5zjSZhj2U-wAO9ILxixy-ryH85CSpJI2Zu4uRPw-WzNYEsjfK7/s640/blogger-image--367005428.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWG-9MzfoyecEH_eAl39SLnQQy9h7RutLC4d4Ceko6ug8Zkthv_Zomun0dIeMzcfgbDighz1XvAuh0vL0xKwbodnIm2r5zjSZhj2U-wAO9ILxixy-ryH85CSpJI2Zu4uRPw-WzNYEsjfK7/s640/blogger-image--367005428.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>Lastly, in the red border I did a free motion heart pattern. (Sorry for the indoor picture quality!) I debated doing this in the black border as well, but decided against it. I like it just in the red. :)</div><div><br></div><div>So, that's my scrappy valentine quilt! I finally got some time put in with my sewing machine today. I was doing some doodling last night and came up with a pattern I just couldn't wait to start. Of course this pushes back every other whip I have started. I swore I wouldn't let those stack up, but you just can't beat the fun of a new project. :) <div><br></div><div>Here's what I came up with:</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5hfWRvqk00E6FoCL6T1SDUqAb9JMXiQnNd3tx-ePqYKVLAxruUxWO9SHR3cCCpglYqKOPDr-xGdz5V_LDQuyITjanKAVkbCFosCoSkzq-3MKUzepf0jS0FnslGxDJ4oTKIOiFjPHy44R-/s640/blogger-image-994341834.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5hfWRvqk00E6FoCL6T1SDUqAb9JMXiQnNd3tx-ePqYKVLAxruUxWO9SHR3cCCpglYqKOPDr-xGdz5V_LDQuyITjanKAVkbCFosCoSkzq-3MKUzepf0jS0FnslGxDJ4oTKIOiFjPHy44R-/s640/blogger-image-994341834.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>It took forever to cut out all of the pieces. Each square on the graph paper finishes at 1.5 inches so there are a lot of pieces to this 9 block quilt. </div><div><br></div><div>So far I have one block put together:</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVbbgTAuXWGV-VFKeUna7xFskKaa1tQuMhond1wt26MPu31fLI_qkhaexawfPvxm3f5v6J8wnHYsrXWS_iO1BluGVkZfo5-Wu4kzu8X4342wdJmu-AYCwe73mZ8HG-53D5YRXTWy90VVI3/s640/blogger-image-2028915827.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVbbgTAuXWGV-VFKeUna7xFskKaa1tQuMhond1wt26MPu31fLI_qkhaexawfPvxm3f5v6J8wnHYsrXWS_iO1BluGVkZfo5-Wu4kzu8X4342wdJmu-AYCwe73mZ8HG-53D5YRXTWy90VVI3/s640/blogger-image-2028915827.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>I love the way it looks! I cut up a bunch of left over white-on-whites, grays, blacks and reds to use in the block. It is a great use for scraps, especially smaller pieces. It finishes at 18 inches so the main body of the quilt will be 54"x 54". </div><div><br></div><div>I am looking forward to putting the other 8 blocks together this week. There's a lot of time that goes into each block, but I just love the way it looks. It feels so good to get back to some sewing!</div>Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07978830891894756534noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9095270954916821266.post-47848573084606222602014-01-26T20:18:00.001-08:002014-01-26T20:18:10.826-08:00Christmas RecapYes, I'm just now getting to my Christmad recap. Things have been pretty quiet here on the crafting front as of late. We've had much too nice of weather lately (and it seems like everywhere else has had a rough winter) that I've been spending a lot of time prepping our yard and garden and not any time in the sewing room. <span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">So, since I don't have anything new to show, I'll show off the stuff that I put together for Christmas presents. </span><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">My husband and I went back to Wisconsin for two weeks for both Christmas and New Year's celebrations and my suitcase was packed to bursting. Thankfully I flew southwest and could check two bags free. I definitely needed both! My siblings and I decided to draw names for a secret Santa gift exchange this year so that cut down on some of the presents I would normally bring, but I ended up making a lot of things for my sister. I'm so happy I drew her name, because I had so many ideas for her!</span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">First I made her an apron out of an old sugar sack she had given me a few years back. She had used it as wrapping for a wreath she made me and told me, "you'll do something fun with it." That I did! These sacks are super absorbent too! I had all of this stuff already at home so I didn't even spend any money on this part of the gift. :)</span></div><div><font face="Helvetica Neue Light, HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif"><br></font><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCnmTqcc7a1c2L4I17TgmO6For_3AVfl0PZ0-kDjkUwEBh5zIqox10OCEzlBuaDOsbH9TvLXWOM8Ye1b7ZGZf6AdcU0wDunwrUKRLGvQBe7v2XpAwXLjHesVKUYXIxeCn5o85PAlvHRXWg/s640/blogger-image-1183513377.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCnmTqcc7a1c2L4I17TgmO6For_3AVfl0PZ0-kDjkUwEBh5zIqox10OCEzlBuaDOsbH9TvLXWOM8Ye1b7ZGZf6AdcU0wDunwrUKRLGvQBe7v2XpAwXLjHesVKUYXIxeCn5o85PAlvHRXWg/s640/blogger-image-1183513377.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Next I made her a makeup brush holder. I knew she wanted a set of brushes so I got her some on a huge sale at Target for $10. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIzXQBtp45P143Hbc8c9q5oqFFh7fz7x8JoC1sHL4sKpuV-BeYOfyoFW18G13oe946vuW5DKK207Iqn7Fvx3vZhYIPuKedbFCWvrVh2gHa5kDG9xOcTlPFHSemEyMsnbKCSFf0Mx68qTBa/s640/blogger-image--1191549485.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIzXQBtp45P143Hbc8c9q5oqFFh7fz7x8JoC1sHL4sKpuV-BeYOfyoFW18G13oe946vuW5DKK207Iqn7Fvx3vZhYIPuKedbFCWvrVh2gHa5kDG9xOcTlPFHSemEyMsnbKCSFf0Mx68qTBa/s640/blogger-image--1191549485.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYW2rKW5Zxk3x-ooFtZmFKY056clkE8CYIzgkf4AoroJWBQpdpl_dc7WTtUqed-gR0ce4IQDi-isOAyJp2ye18S9h-_cBRHpeG_nsViNeaRQtUYvEnu3w7zMxmP3kbscW6BzSD5zuq3ZCc/s640/blogger-image--138237932.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYW2rKW5Zxk3x-ooFtZmFKY056clkE8CYIzgkf4AoroJWBQpdpl_dc7WTtUqed-gR0ce4IQDi-isOAyJp2ye18S9h-_cBRHpeG_nsViNeaRQtUYvEnu3w7zMxmP3kbscW6BzSD5zuq3ZCc/s640/blogger-image--138237932.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Again, I already had all of the supplies for the roll so the only money spent on this was for the brushes. I wanted the inside to be make-up smudge friendly so I used some brown, yellow and light pink fabric. The outside was an orange and yellow print that was begging to be used for this. My sister really likes the color orange along with other vibrant colors. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I also made her a journal out of a children's copy of Little Women from Goodwill. That set me back a whopping $2. Unfortunately I don't have a picture of it. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Lastly, I made her a set of napkins and napkin rings. I had the fabric for the napkins already. For the rings. I bent forks that I bought at Target. Those were $1.68 for 4 forks, so roughly $3.00 for the whole set. I put them all into a box that I bought at Ross for about $5. So, that's how I managed to stay in our budget of $20 or less and give her so much stuff. :)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjshh0rXg7yKcGqpvlY8aL8jsnPBWPueIjESprG1bUtt-NZCTMeWOIAtIJ5b3Ok0jZw6iXANXi7x3yibwFDZljF5Pz3HYuBgmOR7QP9ZanHK9OPv6rYR5SPpZ6BjEU5c7uYVcGTYgfSfvTZ/s640/blogger-image-1267541582.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjshh0rXg7yKcGqpvlY8aL8jsnPBWPueIjESprG1bUtt-NZCTMeWOIAtIJ5b3Ok0jZw6iXANXi7x3yibwFDZljF5Pz3HYuBgmOR7QP9ZanHK9OPv6rYR5SPpZ6BjEU5c7uYVcGTYgfSfvTZ/s640/blogger-image-1267541582.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I made two other sets of these napkins and napkin rings. One went to my mother-in-law (same fabric) and the other went to her neighbor, (pictured below) the mother of one of my husband's good friends. We've stayed close and she and her husband even visited us here in Oregon. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUj8lUQ_nUtoCbr5dAyWZrIvbD21BHiv8mttL0-f5jenAr95zYZiBj6rOLaXPfyIb-0XfZ3kv-auAaS_uyT2LEcaNHZsCtCKoN0a7juFLsYhYJ1OUgB52KjAHd1ex2fvLlQZcczPkKGH-Z/s640/blogger-image-1964994085.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUj8lUQ_nUtoCbr5dAyWZrIvbD21BHiv8mttL0-f5jenAr95zYZiBj6rOLaXPfyIb-0XfZ3kv-auAaS_uyT2LEcaNHZsCtCKoN0a7juFLsYhYJ1OUgB52KjAHd1ex2fvLlQZcczPkKGH-Z/s640/blogger-image-1964994085.jpg"></a></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I also made a couple of aprons for my sister-in-law. So, you can put the apron on and then just tug on the waist strings to tighten it around your neck. Then you just tie it in back. It makes it so you don't have to tie the neck if it's too long, you can just adjust it each time you put it on. I love that, because the knots in apron neck ties always irritate me and my neck. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Well, that pretty much sums up what I made for presents. I did all of that between Thanksgiving and Christmas while traveling back and forth to Wisconsin for both of those holidays. It was a busy couple of weeks! I always think that I'll start my gifts earlier, but that never happens. Maybe that should be my New Year's resolution...</div></div></span></div>Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07978830891894756534noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9095270954916821266.post-67419520066407018002013-12-13T13:49:00.001-08:002013-12-13T13:49:33.682-08:00Easy Peasy EnchiladasHi everyone! I like them plain, but my husband adds extra taco sauce and salsa. I've also enjoyed them with sour cream and I'm sure some guacamole would be heavenly. I've also made them with canned corn added into the middle of the enchiladas, just layer it between the beef and cheese. These come out pretty mild, but you can add more heat by adding some hot sauce to the top or adding some green chiles or chili powder inside the enchiladas. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I love how quick these are to make and they are pretty cheap. I buy the rice for $1/box when it goes on sale. I also buy the taco sauce on the buy-one-get-one sales. I like to serve it with a salad. I cheat on that and buy the bag mix of Mexican salad. It comes with creamy ranch cilantro dressing, tortilla strips, cheese and bacon. For $2.99 per bag I can't beat that and it's so easy to make! Some corn and refried beans on the side would also be great. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Anyway, I made these start to finish in under an hour, so they are great when you are pressed for time. And if you have kids they can always help sprinkle the cheese and make the accompanying salad. :) Happy cooking everyone!</div></font></div>Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07978830891894756534noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9095270954916821266.post-56847244535819170252013-12-12T19:48:00.001-08:002013-12-12T19:48:10.195-08:00Finished Double Irish ChainI know I promised this a long time ago, but I'm finally getting around to posting pictures of my finished Double Irish Chain quilt. :) We've been using it for a while now so I figure I should show it off!<div><br></div><div>Here it is all happy on our bed. :)</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPwxC-iLmPwD-fhkioORhnG0YeUNz4MbSXiQwPfFwIB4X0AxHzioANX25jcWe9Ccmf-Ec0EqG8vkrrArR5o0gZzL2AzH2_JH0ocy9jUfGS4FogINIKL4b9rjzaYPX6WGFTKdI-RzLpWumB/s640/blogger-image-1254000952.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPwxC-iLmPwD-fhkioORhnG0YeUNz4MbSXiQwPfFwIB4X0AxHzioANX25jcWe9Ccmf-Ec0EqG8vkrrArR5o0gZzL2AzH2_JH0ocy9jUfGS4FogINIKL4b9rjzaYPX6WGFTKdI-RzLpWumB/s640/blogger-image-1254000952.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>We love it! I backed it with a really soft cotton bed sheet. It was the easiest back I've ever used. I used a king size sheet for this queen size quilt. That gave me plenty of room for excess around the edges for quilting. And, it was only $15 at Target since it was on sale! What a steal for a quilt back. </div><div><br></div><div>I love how the quilting makes it puff. You can see the stitches a lot better on the back. </div><div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMpSPPhdgpwvbzma4yjpJQu6yF4DPdZM17kV_Z0mpocIR3eSz8B18zHR06F1-jxF0jDreASkz05ouxHxMi_JzBIWO11hmBOlSc_WhQf7SrDbY6vubty5XrdBSes-TxqBkrh6RtHfd7dRPF/s640/blogger-image--1945223995.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMpSPPhdgpwvbzma4yjpJQu6yF4DPdZM17kV_Z0mpocIR3eSz8B18zHR06F1-jxF0jDreASkz05ouxHxMi_JzBIWO11hmBOlSc_WhQf7SrDbY6vubty5XrdBSes-TxqBkrh6RtHfd7dRPF/s640/blogger-image--1945223995.jpg"></a></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I wasn't always perfect with my lines, as you can see... Sorry I've been gone for so long! We've had a lot of visitors over the past month and I haven't had much time for sewing. I thought I'd check in before we all get swept away into Thanksgiving and show you the two small things I've completed this month. <div><br></div><div>First up was my Color Bee Shocked bee block for October. Yes, I said October. I know, I know I became one of <i>those people. </i>I never meant to get behind, but it just happened and I don't know how to explain it. I felt really guilty about it so I included some extra goodies along with my block and apology note. I've made a pact with myself never to let that happen again! Anyway, here's my block:</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYVlbs65dHWRnRAKMav6tzs1XFcoCNfrnB-6-6bP0jcWDVHpt4ydgvGezI9yHzBbJCql7ixGuKHIy3yMcYSsjQTuHbnVmvt_sML72qMwpagrobUT01_WqZngD1EF6vXryJBNLVJlThNSas/s640/blogger-image-1473519719.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYVlbs65dHWRnRAKMav6tzs1XFcoCNfrnB-6-6bP0jcWDVHpt4ydgvGezI9yHzBbJCql7ixGuKHIy3yMcYSsjQTuHbnVmvt_sML72qMwpagrobUT01_WqZngD1EF6vXryJBNLVJlThNSas/s640/blogger-image-1473519719.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>It's called X Marks the Spot and uses a bunch of HSTs. It was actually pretty fun to put together, so I shouldn't have waited so long to do it!</div><div><br></div><div>My other November project I just put together today. It's a laptop sleeve for my new computer. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlBNuPOKQDU6unSNqjaP0TrCu4Y5q4pEDyz65KUpspCQJ3MFokR2kFI-ObNlvG-B6_NWaPP_mIXScWy6ah2nqOF_PJ_FEU3NIZvNGCGxJrkaEgKx-50szXuJEznk2mp3OdAYvUhNmeYspw/s640/blogger-image-380448641.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlBNuPOKQDU6unSNqjaP0TrCu4Y5q4pEDyz65KUpspCQJ3MFokR2kFI-ObNlvG-B6_NWaPP_mIXScWy6ah2nqOF_PJ_FEU3NIZvNGCGxJrkaEgKx-50szXuJEznk2mp3OdAYvUhNmeYspw/s640/blogger-image-380448641.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>I had a bunch of 2.5 inch squares left over from my double Irish chain quilt, so I decided to put some of them to good use. I just sewed them up corner to corner and cut off the excess. That way I wouldn't have to trim up all of those HST corners. </div><div><br></div><div>For the layout, I wanted something more modern (I had thought about doing a simple pinwheel pattern, but it just didn't seem cool enough). So, I played around with turning the HSTs left and right and came up with this broken square design. It's more modern than I usually go, and it's growing on me. :) </div><div><br></div><div>Speaking of modern, I did get to go to my first Portland Modern Quilt Guild meeting this past week! It was a lot of fun and I got to put a face to an online quilting friend. Thanks for coming with me, Kathy! Hopefully we'll be able to attend their holiday meeting in a couple weeks once they nail down the date, time and location. Until then I'll try my best to get some more sewing time in!</div><div><br></div><div>Happy Thanksgiving and happy sewing everyone!</div>Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07978830891894756534noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9095270954916821266.post-24030468037223137922013-10-22T21:00:00.000-07:002013-10-22T21:00:07.921-07:00Wicked Wicked Wicked<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">

<br /></div>
Last year I created a couple table toppers for the Wicked hop, so this year I wanted to make something to adorn my wall. My husband and I moved to Portland this year and so I have new walls to decorate this Halloween season. I decided to put this together for you all today:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNodsPvXpoSnM3yRh64SrkI-qZd2IsTCMqHoWrhRq7V_AlPcMF6cgVSUhqHuejgNZPUqd1bj2IKHAIfhmhapT2-L7L4aPrqXgqe5aRm_POcGrLA1D1TAJWSZXf-cOBME8pbj1hcalle-2C/s1600/WP_20131022_15_34_58_Pro.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNodsPvXpoSnM3yRh64SrkI-qZd2IsTCMqHoWrhRq7V_AlPcMF6cgVSUhqHuejgNZPUqd1bj2IKHAIfhmhapT2-L7L4aPrqXgqe5aRm_POcGrLA1D1TAJWSZXf-cOBME8pbj1hcalle-2C/s320/WP_20131022_15_34_58_Pro.jpg" width="228" /></a></div>
<br />
It's a spooky graveyard scene on a night with a blazing full moon. I would not want to be stuck there at night!<br />
<br />
This wall hanging was a lot more work than I had originally anticipated. Here's a look at my planning sheet:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg85k2NEMSRM7yne-0h5JFIXHLKdvuJ8ql9zqskxW7Yeppxm9XRnYvI7VxS4-nl7WMPfPVnaESy2mvdXg_S_9HStDoMiNCZ_YEvxuXW1vfgRD4UwIeRlLXGORM_y2jGpLoAoDywF4XlJ2l1/s1600/WP_20131022_15_35_55_Pro.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg85k2NEMSRM7yne-0h5JFIXHLKdvuJ8ql9zqskxW7Yeppxm9XRnYvI7VxS4-nl7WMPfPVnaESy2mvdXg_S_9HStDoMiNCZ_YEvxuXW1vfgRD4UwIeRlLXGORM_y2jGpLoAoDywF4XlJ2l1/s320/WP_20131022_15_35_55_Pro.jpg" width="228" /></a></div>
<br />
Yikes! So many tiny pieces! Here's a close up of one of the spots with those little pieces (1" HSTs!):<br />

everyone!</span></span><span style="font-size: medium;"> </span><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-size: medium;">I've
been seeing pictures of upcycled skirts all over Pinterest lately,
and I've been wanting to give it a try. Unfortunately, I'm not
much of an apparel sewer. I usually just stick to quilts, hot pad
holders, table runners, you know, things I don't have to wear in
public! If I screw up on a quilt no one will really notice it but me.
However, if my butt is hanging out of a skirt, several people are
going to notice that!</span></span></span></div>

expected. (Sorry for the bathroom pics, but I don't have a full

pictures of the process because I wasn't sure I would even like it,

Hello everyone!<br />
<br />
I have finished my butterfly quilt and wanted to show it off to you all. All finished it is 38 x 40 inches and I love it!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrydgVK1DwftQfda8WHLUuQZF0vA5c4MsTWZQm6a0w3qYvED1_OEqRPjieoGEbAjfvInaf-QJvwQ91zyKg7s_RYRcf5-xvipXBzWr6GR817d-Ut17pQOyPrIlFl0dHC9LMmHKIOzjCS20a/s1600/WP_20131007_010.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="248" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrydgVK1DwftQfda8WHLUuQZF0vA5c4MsTWZQm6a0w3qYvED1_OEqRPjieoGEbAjfvInaf-QJvwQ91zyKg7s_RYRcf5-xvipXBzWr6GR817d-Ut17pQOyPrIlFl0dHC9LMmHKIOzjCS20a/s320/WP_20131007_010.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I used all free motion quilting on this one. I did a squiggle in each butterfly in coordinating thread. In the sashing I did a heart motif and also used that in the borders. Here's a close up of the quilting:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoTD3-iFoTt1XQtAEeN3E_UAvcDM5xsAsNT0Zbbh1pSGaPFqehAm7Gw3DlDKDjgFUSQbjO2ZuFWmPlY1m3tCAorrKdNmNO5oECBGzfx1S7t9FdxnLL_XeG7Ohq_etKKzZeKznPFD7JUcCP/s1600/WP_20131007_012.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoTD3-iFoTt1XQtAEeN3E_UAvcDM5xsAsNT0Zbbh1pSGaPFqehAm7Gw3DlDKDjgFUSQbjO2ZuFWmPlY1m3tCAorrKdNmNO5oECBGzfx1S7t9FdxnLL_XeG7Ohq_etKKzZeKznPFD7JUcCP/s320/WP_20131007_012.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
For the back I used this super cute argyle print. I still have some more left so I can use it on some more projects.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT8jOUy5tMLHskgkX8Eybv8DwFedT9_OyaFZx4DQJyGJ7MkxvNNBNAlDwGIGf7Q-memI-kbPDgwTGXKiRtXwQ0qQUf3hTQzfqpMnal5SML9b1VTA1LEtUOkTswkz06Nd1hKfOE95SNH0EN/s1600/WP_20131007_015.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="277" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT8jOUy5tMLHskgkX8Eybv8DwFedT9_OyaFZx4DQJyGJ7MkxvNNBNAlDwGIGf7Q-memI-kbPDgwTGXKiRtXwQ0qQUf3hTQzfqpMnal5SML9b1VTA1LEtUOkTswkz06Nd1hKfOE95SNH0EN/s320/WP_20131007_015.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
So, I have decided to sell this little quilt and have opened an Etsy shop. I don't have much in there right now, just this quilt and some blank note cards that I put together. If you want to check it out, you can see <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/CraftieBunny">my shop here</a>. It's called <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/CraftieBunny">CraftieBunny</a>. Hopefully I can start making more things to put in there. :)<br />
<br />
I've also finished my Double Irish Chain Quilt, but I'll save that for another post. It is enjoying itself on our bed for now. Anyway, what have you all been up to<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">?</span></div>

Hello everyone! I know, I know it's the first day of October, but I couldn't help myself from completing a little November project instead. It has been very windy and chilly here which reminds me more of November from Wisconsin rather than October. Even though I live in Portland now I guess I have been channeling the fall season stuff from Wisconsin. :)<br />
<br />
I have been spending a lot of time in my sewing room lately (with the completion of my <a href="http://www.therecipebunny.blogspot.com/2013/09/double-irish-chain-top.html">Double Irish Chain top</a> and the <a href="http://www.therecipebunny.blogspot.com/2013/09/butterfly-baby-quilt.html">Butterfly Baby Quilt top</a>), and I wanted something I could do while being in the living room with my husband. So, I got to drawing and designed this little turkey cross stitch.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFxLGWX74h2zmEF7mzleWCA9DSulOFRhhuiKTRAlQFCIqFvmz4o88sT0pcMh-1Jg2j0kT4wcu1wKenicb6xCWyWG3hzgzuJI6z39Fv9w0trYMmEf217LvlSMydDw6I8ZxyM7MwwNvPbAiY/s1600/WP_20131001_005.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFxLGWX74h2zmEF7mzleWCA9DSulOFRhhuiKTRAlQFCIqFvmz4o88sT0pcMh-1Jg2j0kT4wcu1wKenicb6xCWyWG3hzgzuJI6z39Fv9w0trYMmEf217LvlSMydDw6I8ZxyM7MwwNvPbAiY/s320/WP_20131001_005.jpg" width="168" /></a></div>
<br />
I just love how plump he is. :) I think I'm going to make him into a card. I just need to get some larger card stock so I can make an aperture opening card and then I'll be good to go. I still have some more cross stitch fabric, maybe I should make something for Halloween (or Christmas already???)... :) Happy crafting everyone!</div>

Hi everyone! I bet I'm in the same boat as everyone else when I say I can't believe it's the last day of September already! Summer sure went by fast.<br />
<br />
As a quick update here today I finished my butterfly baby quilt top. It measures 38" wide by 40" long. If you missed it, you can see my <a href="http://therecipebunny.blogspot.com/2013/09/butterfly-block-with-tutorial.html">butterfly quilt block tutorial here</a>.<br />

Now I just need to find some fabric for the back, quilt it, and bind it. I'm thinking I might try to sell this one as I have no need for a baby quilt right now. Otherwise I might hang it as a wall-hanging quilt in my sewing room. Hmmm, decisions decisions! :)<br />
<br />
Anyway, hope you're all having a great start to your week. Now, on to October! :)</div>

Hi everyone! I hope you're all enjoying the transition into fall. It's a blustery 65 degrees here (55 yesterday) so I'm enjoying snuggling up in all of my warm quilts! :)<br />
<br />
I have been really busy this month. At the beginning of the month I talked about wanting to work on my Double Irish Chain quilt. I've had this one in the works for 3 years now. I had all of the pieces cut out, but <u>none</u> of the 81 blocks completed. So, I set out to get the top done this month and I've succeeded!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVl7oVEeK5xmrMxBDTtjRVqi6dtuDtpwJ3yLff4gUSyruxCZOobtN9A2gltZ0JDsnmlV65KziKMZmvSOZpDS6GfjEmYUJHRqYilFLHGlZm0qSu02XXoNAlPW4wMI8d0i2T2wjV0lQMI2P1/s1600/WP_20130928_005.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVl7oVEeK5xmrMxBDTtjRVqi6dtuDtpwJ3yLff4gUSyruxCZOobtN9A2gltZ0JDsnmlV65KziKMZmvSOZpDS6GfjEmYUJHRqYilFLHGlZm0qSu02XXoNAlPW4wMI8d0i2T2wjV0lQMI2P1/s320/WP_20130928_005.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span id="goog_421956830"></span><span id="goog_421956831"></span><br />
It measures 96 inches square with the border. Each block was 10 inches (finished) and I added a 3 inch (finished) border all around. This is definitely big enough for our bed. Here's a pic of it on the bed before the border was added:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJhfIVHxlDpMAgScunweovgdhmX5vhvty2Ol8O50FQ87nAhasy54OaUXFhVKf66I4NhB6VYu-IfFBwH1dFJj6fAW_XVBWmFpLI0QC_V8Lek-vo9OHRRZYvUYzkEwxW_PU7GfwMa1Saclug/s1600/WP_20130925_001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJhfIVHxlDpMAgScunweovgdhmX5vhvty2Ol8O50FQ87nAhasy54OaUXFhVKf66I4NhB6VYu-IfFBwH1dFJj6fAW_XVBWmFpLI0QC_V8Lek-vo9OHRRZYvUYzkEwxW_PU7GfwMa1Saclug/s320/WP_20130925_001.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This is going to be the largest quilt I've ever made. My Super Mario Quilt was longer (105 inches), but it was only 75 inches wide. This one will be just as hard to maneuver though. I need to get backing fabric for this yet. I'm not sure what I want to go with. I'm thinking a dark green would be nice since there's so much light green in the top.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU7mrYyBaZJIjiPwwqwgP1jtLWbszifZV-kAkz2isOLYyWRF0k9RpkLGMtmETCjmR-AyWCATpt7ekO0cgBgASzISxGLxZBcGFOjJV1hznU_gDUL-W3wEHDoyTuFM4tyLja46s-eIkKKBJm/s1600/WP_20130928_009.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU7mrYyBaZJIjiPwwqwgP1jtLWbszifZV-kAkz2isOLYyWRF0k9RpkLGMtmETCjmR-AyWCATpt7ekO0cgBgASzISxGLxZBcGFOjJV1hznU_gDUL-W3wEHDoyTuFM4tyLja46s-eIkKKBJm/s320/WP_20130928_009.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I wasn't quite sure about the light blue print when I started putting all of the blocks together. It's still not my favorite, but it's growing on me. I didn't want to go out and buy a different fabric since it was already cut up into the squares.<br />
<br />
So, any suggestions on how I should quilt this beast? All over pattern? Something specific in each colored section? Border treatment? An all over stipple would be the easiest and wouldn't take too long. I could also do straight line quilting to play up the diamond effect of the quilt. That might actually be even easier. Hmmm... what do you think?</div>

Hello everyone! I hope you're all doing well. I wanted to share this butterfly block that I came up with last night. I thought it was pretty cute, so I made one, then two, and then decided to finally take pictures and do a tutorial with the third one. :) I hope you enjoy this block, and if you make one I'd love to see the finished product!<br />
<br />
So, here are the directions and what you'll need to make your very own butterfly:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
You'll need 4 different shades of fabric:<br />
<br />
Background fabric<br />
Body fabric<br />
Top wing fabric<br />
Bottom wing fabric<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
From the background fabric cut:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(1) 10.5" x 2.5" rectangle</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(10) 1.25" squares</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(6) 2.5" squares</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghiKq7C1xYsMZczsE46Inmu0eRtlZihyphenhyphenGtdK3uCLfoAZkHnYA1akcW8f9YDDaZmMVWwH5yo1f4VvzaPeYdm8fObDisKFgP7vJlwbNsn60VENMeEYMQwfzbv2CkgVJhSUx21IwJm3I7b8xF/s1600/WP_20130909_003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghiKq7C1xYsMZczsE46Inmu0eRtlZihyphenhyphenGtdK3uCLfoAZkHnYA1akcW8f9YDDaZmMVWwH5yo1f4VvzaPeYdm8fObDisKFgP7vJlwbNsn60VENMeEYMQwfzbv2CkgVJhSUx21IwJm3I7b8xF/s320/WP_20130909_003.jpg" width="276" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
From the body fabric cut (1) 10.5" x 2.5" rectangle</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
From the top wing fabric cut (2) 6.5" x 4.5" rectangles</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
From the bottom wing fabric cut:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(2) 4.5" squares</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(2) 2.5" squares</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisJq1NxIWJYcN20_WCWPubNsXCq1EQHWp0fbxlhZ9LXAdBEikHxIoA_WaWtFtBIS5g67e3GIQez5wIclh_cSfr61Kgv2Ys5maT9F_avlkKKI7ZB9cIPc8WBiD0hWvWeiHF0nmfNnES0Jkx/s1600/WP_20130909_006.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisJq1NxIWJYcN20_WCWPubNsXCq1EQHWp0fbxlhZ9LXAdBEikHxIoA_WaWtFtBIS5g67e3GIQez5wIclh_cSfr61Kgv2Ys5maT9F_avlkKKI7ZB9cIPc8WBiD0hWvWeiHF0nmfNnES0Jkx/s320/WP_20130909_006.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
To assemble the body, take (4) 1.25" background squares and the body rectangle piece. Lay a background square on each corner of the body piece. The background squares will not overlap, they will just meet in the middle of the rectangle.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXZoPeoJmrhHhIa20tAT1tYXqPc0-XVRQR6UCFiv9XBvSd-b57e-A6ghAl1BwKrd2pXWb4SKC77Tqp6BbYDw0jfey15EA_aD3tOmENPWJ1n7OzPW5EoXAgE-R0dh2Eq0msyDjdvmdWw9dM/s1600/WP_20130909_007.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXZoPeoJmrhHhIa20tAT1tYXqPc0-XVRQR6UCFiv9XBvSd-b57e-A6ghAl1BwKrd2pXWb4SKC77Tqp6BbYDw0jfey15EA_aD3tOmENPWJ1n7OzPW5EoXAgE-R0dh2Eq0msyDjdvmdWw9dM/s320/WP_20130909_007.jpg" width="103" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now, one at a time, sew diagonally from corner to corner on each of the background squares. You can mark a line on the back of each one and sew on the line if you want to, but I didn't do that for any of my corner squares for this block. They are small enough to be manageable by hand without moving too much. Pinning usually helps me more than a line across the block.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4nuRA4y1Zw9AUiHI5PD5djdYOqEUxFN-X3ukcBIn32jGwGkB7FxJOocREc95A-XRfKYGQdpAA6fdbCgdc2NImmQxN1Q3AICmL6EJXTCGHGztM46vEXRB95JLd8p6QKUjtCpJG_gID5gUM/s1600/WP_20130909_011.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4nuRA4y1Zw9AUiHI5PD5djdYOqEUxFN-X3ukcBIn32jGwGkB7FxJOocREc95A-XRfKYGQdpAA6fdbCgdc2NImmQxN1Q3AICmL6EJXTCGHGztM46vEXRB95JLd8p6QKUjtCpJG_gID5gUM/s320/WP_20130909_011.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Once all four corner squares are sewn on, set this piece aside.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
To assemble the top wings you'll need the 2 top wing pieces, (4) background 2.5" squares, (2) background 1.25" squares and both of the bottom wing 2.5" squares. Lay out the pieces like this:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheMBCsTFmrr-JfK99Knf_97ior2AYQ4o6gjbvZoGq6Rm6vrrsJStcxm2T_C1aOpnNC51bVuipf0ccPbIscr324FMNY3g6M97AGriTVBQoLH8LParGqMFhQBZr1azR45zivbcH-r267nxvX/s1600/WP_20130909_008.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="208" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheMBCsTFmrr-JfK99Knf_97ior2AYQ4o6gjbvZoGq6Rm6vrrsJStcxm2T_C1aOpnNC51bVuipf0ccPbIscr324FMNY3g6M97AGriTVBQoLH8LParGqMFhQBZr1azR45zivbcH-r267nxvX/s320/WP_20130909_008.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The pieces will be a mirror image of each other so that the wings are symmetrical. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Starting with the bottom wing squares, sew diagonally across the small square (right sides together) to attach that piece to the top wing piece.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Trim 1/4" away from the line you just sewed:</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Press toward the bottom wing pieces.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now sew on the rest of the background squares in the same manner. The large one on the bottom with the bottom wing square will overlap the bottom wing piece. Set the top wing pieces aside for trimming and pressing later.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
To assemble the bottom wings you'll need both bottom wing 4.5" squares, (2) 2.5" background squares and (4) 1.25" background squares. Lay out your pieces like this:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguhOOVzvgscSYdcfLcMkUW1vwIOasUa3ao7LTzMY-eR_DL37FNQRsP3O7l0Bcsf7hhyphenhyphenWu_Xs0YR23pf_nOo9wIhRkUdUpvJaf8PmIym0PJ7wBt1Z-9W5eHxTz9yVfcE30rr04k2ED0Uky4/s1600/WP_20130909_009.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="159" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguhOOVzvgscSYdcfLcMkUW1vwIOasUa3ao7LTzMY-eR_DL37FNQRsP3O7l0Bcsf7hhyphenhyphenWu_Xs0YR23pf_nOo9wIhRkUdUpvJaf8PmIym0PJ7wBt1Z-9W5eHxTz9yVfcE30rr04k2ED0Uky4/s320/WP_20130909_009.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Sew them together one at a time on the diagonal to attach the background squares to the bottom wing pieces. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now, take all of your pieces and trim each corner square you sewed on, 1/4" away from the seam. Your pieces should look like this now:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWICU_gV2xNeam9YzUuGQX7T4eyDkOqUipTe7O1R-H7KgUVMwdWsLkLCdhGjucwPRj5LpfLhySKJdbQplE-8YY15KFe7tk5xuiRMTWJOulOZIYby9RHz3_mIGn3FiE0gQr-qd7SeVb9p4E/s1600/WP_20130909_015.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWICU_gV2xNeam9YzUuGQX7T4eyDkOqUipTe7O1R-H7KgUVMwdWsLkLCdhGjucwPRj5LpfLhySKJdbQplE-8YY15KFe7tk5xuiRMTWJOulOZIYby9RHz3_mIGn3FiE0gQr-qd7SeVb9p4E/s320/WP_20130909_015.jpg" width="269" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now you're ready to press your seams. For the body piece, press toward the background squares. For the top wings, press the top two corner squares toward the large wing piece and press the bottom two corner squares away from the large wing piece. For the bottom wings press all of the corner squares toward the wing piece. Your seams should look like this:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxHXUXslcETnQxk9dktL72GC7iuBcyzTONyCBjCC96loqm9JJUSRG7gL81G9Y4Td7DRaN6tYzhrI-wMRCL2dTdYgbZ73Lhmr3qAIb1sx_ueH417Ksm1DAQb15XjI7i52NA7VLQWF8-ZmlL/s1600/WP_20130909_017.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="287" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxHXUXslcETnQxk9dktL72GC7iuBcyzTONyCBjCC96loqm9JJUSRG7gL81G9Y4Td7DRaN6tYzhrI-wMRCL2dTdYgbZ73Lhmr3qAIb1sx_ueH417Ksm1DAQb15XjI7i52NA7VLQWF8-ZmlL/s320/WP_20130909_017.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Pressing in this manner will make your seams nest for the next steps in sewing the block all the way together.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now, sew each top wing to each bottom wing. The corner square seams will nest giving you really crisp points. I usually pin in the middle by the nesting seams and near the end.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO-pQ3bHv5E5tV-n0y8nGn67Pi50dOr20WHMUpJW9liF31KUfHKvzC4Qu64Shwcl0M5IY_Fz_WUZy2uv0F1JrYMjjmJQzSBEcoDyCHcM2cMsTfNu6cDWugvW75cDp0x8BmY1bLs6RQu86E/s1600/WP_20130909_019.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO-pQ3bHv5E5tV-n0y8nGn67Pi50dOr20WHMUpJW9liF31KUfHKvzC4Qu64Shwcl0M5IY_Fz_WUZy2uv0F1JrYMjjmJQzSBEcoDyCHcM2cMsTfNu6cDWugvW75cDp0x8BmY1bLs6RQu86E/s320/WP_20130909_019.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
To make your points match up perfectly your stitch line should intersect the corner square seams where they cross. Like this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiP9Kce0FxOgX4ptw8owKb4a9BuOGEbta7BT8lMocP3ooiaonr_8GZ32vhZ6BdL1GIJmHT71ktS4XSBTp9N7hc4xFghGhZTpxDXBNj73omYSwyeCWXXn-YKDnxUK9X9tZNeOyxSXQL1HAmR/s1600/WP_20130909_020.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiP9Kce0FxOgX4ptw8owKb4a9BuOGEbta7BT8lMocP3ooiaonr_8GZ32vhZ6BdL1GIJmHT71ktS4XSBTp9N7hc4xFghGhZTpxDXBNj73omYSwyeCWXXn-YKDnxUK9X9tZNeOyxSXQL1HAmR/s320/WP_20130909_020.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now, press the wings. I pressed toward the bottom wing since the top already had a lot of seams. You could press the seams open though.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhi2-wBojlJyYpnQ7LZHnKxpB3f1mCbmeopc2Mm5Vllx1Vj2tiUftDEZ64iN4K3UxtXEjUJMd7Cm_C5uCUcCkKOLEMEDIlowkuWgnF_AP93j_m2xs9xOd2OJfusWBGWMAGmYYf_L2Q1ss6F/s1600/WP_20130909_021.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="275" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhi2-wBojlJyYpnQ7LZHnKxpB3f1mCbmeopc2Mm5Vllx1Vj2tiUftDEZ64iN4K3UxtXEjUJMd7Cm_C5uCUcCkKOLEMEDIlowkuWgnF_AP93j_m2xs9xOd2OJfusWBGWMAGmYYf_L2Q1ss6F/s320/WP_20130909_021.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now sew your wings to your body. The bottom corner squares on the bottom wing will nest with the corner squares on the bottom of the body piece. I started pinning here, then pinned the top end and then pinned each seam in the middle. Press the seams toward the body piece (or again you can press them open if you wish).</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirDMv3HhU2EUVg41UoPovkg1u0ZQxFy8RxfCDOUZMumG6pMrPnxT1031Gpdpd29Ia2D0WO0ZHL5kvDU5WL3MdInjcxWznkL3hv7i4Ax9tCe_CZt30izMenIfWh3JCnebsbcRY_E2l8ACV7/s1600/WP_20130909_022.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirDMv3HhU2EUVg41UoPovkg1u0ZQxFy8RxfCDOUZMumG6pMrPnxT1031Gpdpd29Ia2D0WO0ZHL5kvDU5WL3MdInjcxWznkL3hv7i4Ax9tCe_CZt30izMenIfWh3JCnebsbcRY_E2l8ACV7/s320/WP_20130909_022.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now, take your last remaining background rectangle (10.5" x 2.5") and sew this to the top of the butterfly, pinning in place. Press toward the background rectangle.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The last thing you have to do is embroider your antennae. I drew mine on with a washable pen. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIs9uIU0bJMdyNHnE-YGhUnNt78yqk0lPSnE37Zg_595quvbYMJ36fQWEeDG0lctTuCRtAdmff2pEDo0O-xlTF7WOqPNeiENNTToPGxuBNY5kWXQNxmxJqFW0Q8hSW-XP_El-12EoQEJAi/s1600/WP_20130909_023.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIs9uIU0bJMdyNHnE-YGhUnNt78yqk0lPSnE37Zg_595quvbYMJ36fQWEeDG0lctTuCRtAdmff2pEDo0O-xlTF7WOqPNeiENNTToPGxuBNY5kWXQNxmxJqFW0Q8hSW-XP_El-12EoQEJAi/s320/WP_20130909_023.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Then embroider and pressed the block one last time.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmPDY87jBRUCP_y64dGbC-18ByOhf2Co-RZmoEB1sW5tA3KeEHsIMmiG99pQsS-tMor2oIBvjY0a0vwRBeSh74bK9OV7noVfhY5fAgbw7O14eZBmdnWzYS2-4r8TFprCKbHyUchURvCTCx/s1600/WP_20130909_024.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmPDY87jBRUCP_y64dGbC-18ByOhf2Co-RZmoEB1sW5tA3KeEHsIMmiG99pQsS-tMor2oIBvjY0a0vwRBeSh74bK9OV7noVfhY5fAgbw7O14eZBmdnWzYS2-4r8TFprCKbHyUchURvCTCx/s320/WP_20130909_024.jpg" width="268" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And that's it! :) Now you have a beautiful butterfly. But, he needs a few friends, so this is what he looks like with some others:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7t8QhD6KiqE3OddtT0ka0sU9deNItEdBVonfzC61yGujlTuX_G0hAewNzFmsFjcyGuN-bIOfn3fSZD2FzYUwBlB7XK6E65Nh8KX0SV45Eqh3VKd4a9Xa4p_EM8N_jbZboaWegIx1Uk0-N/s1600/WP_20130909_025.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7t8QhD6KiqE3OddtT0ka0sU9deNItEdBVonfzC61yGujlTuX_G0hAewNzFmsFjcyGuN-bIOfn3fSZD2FzYUwBlB7XK6E65Nh8KX0SV45Eqh3VKd4a9Xa4p_EM8N_jbZboaWegIx1Uk0-N/s320/WP_20130909_025.jpg" width="115" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglOSpOFXudNwF840ZBzXMWCzzbKIGcW6HlN4WFJQg-xP2WW75c_FwOTvjcd_L2iKBBI8qkhKUZuRXPvZnqcSmDoR-RxBVY-TqlsYkzPUx8sn00nF20a5FWm7W8bfWGQZqBN8MThL5EdKz2/s1600/WP_20130909_026.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="143" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglOSpOFXudNwF840ZBzXMWCzzbKIGcW6HlN4WFJQg-xP2WW75c_FwOTvjcd_L2iKBBI8qkhKUZuRXPvZnqcSmDoR-RxBVY-TqlsYkzPUx8sn00nF20a5FWm7W8bfWGQZqBN8MThL5EdKz2/s320/WP_20130909_026.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I'm planning on making 9 of these into a baby quilt. The outside columns will be flying north and the middle column will be flying south. I also plan to add a 2.5" sashing between the columns to give it a little more width and then border the whole thing out in 2.5" background fabric. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I found this pattern is great for scraps. I didn't really cut into my stash at all except for the background white pieces. A black and white jelly roll would also work well since the background pieces and the body pieces can easily be cut from the 2.5 inch strips. Anywho - thanks for reading all the way to the end and happy crafting!</div>

<br />
Hello everyone! I've been waiting for a microwave installer guy to show up all afternoon. Since I couldn't leave the house, I had a lot of time to get some sewing and crafting done!<br />
<br />
I have several WiPs in the wings that I've been working on. First up is my beach quilt - Bits and Pieces. I had enough to put a 5 inch scrappy border all around it. So, the top is now done. I plan to bind it in black so it will have a skinny border around all of the color to finish it off.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibQkzt6V8VvrUBOsfgaAWzW6JqNxFpiqshy7VYsDCmvBaejsKIns6qJHIVGbNh9RlzaYFxovhaWqNWo5dzgMt13OYiasMDFkYTfheSo08u6JdPf0T8ZdyFGGojv3F4T-EcUpfYLT01zO7n/s1600/WP_20130820_008.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="287" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibQkzt6V8VvrUBOsfgaAWzW6JqNxFpiqshy7VYsDCmvBaejsKIns6qJHIVGbNh9RlzaYFxovhaWqNWo5dzgMt13OYiasMDFkYTfheSo08u6JdPf0T8ZdyFGGojv3F4T-EcUpfYLT01zO7n/s320/WP_20130820_008.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The border looks a little more pastel than it is in real life. Too bad I didn't have any more red or pink from the middle fabrics to use, but I just barely had enough of the other ones to pretty much make it all the way around.<br />
<br />
For quilting I think I'm going to do a loopy all over patter in the middle, then do hearts in the black border. I'm not sure what I'm going to do in the scrappy border, maybe just some free-form wavy lines since it will primarily be used at the beach. Maybe I should be really brave and add some feathers to those wavy lines! *Gulp!* I've never done feathers before...<br />
<br />
My second project of the day was finishing up some Christmas stockings for my husband and I.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpczQDF776684stfMznTSYc-ao3tNZm7aM0skCUQ24e7MPWoXwgHw8qfvu7RdnxpXDfVJ1fFfzNRneqAn4rwn4uEJ_LGpYnC_N_168wcceIA1BhVq-NevC5SuAH4v67ZctHN6PbrM7Sd46/s1600/WP_20130820_001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpczQDF776684stfMznTSYc-ao3tNZm7aM0skCUQ24e7MPWoXwgHw8qfvu7RdnxpXDfVJ1fFfzNRneqAn4rwn4uEJ_LGpYnC_N_168wcceIA1BhVq-NevC5SuAH4v67ZctHN6PbrM7Sd46/s320/WP_20130820_001.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I know it's way far out from Christmas, but these have been on my to-do list since last November. Obviously I fell short from making them last year, so I decided I'd finish them up super early this year. :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3l3h1XUVb26rGtBxOy-W576kQ-vcSLlEpR_EJu8kkNt0SVp71k3a4aCKPuFpk_yrQj1VBqM91MQXAJPuFPlZ2ZXoBJVJD6NgDsIJraygGNCTR7fyRqVROYZknYhURS0WnvENE4YlPu5Ft/s1600/WP_20130820_002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3l3h1XUVb26rGtBxOy-W576kQ-vcSLlEpR_EJu8kkNt0SVp71k3a4aCKPuFpk_yrQj1VBqM91MQXAJPuFPlZ2ZXoBJVJD6NgDsIJraygGNCTR7fyRqVROYZknYhURS0WnvENE4YlPu5Ft/s320/WP_20130820_002.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I really love the texture that the diamond quilting gives the stockings. I still need to run them through the wash to get rid of my quilting lines, but I have a few months to do that. ;) Otherwise, they are good to go!<br />
<br />
Third, I started a new scarf! The pattern is called Falling Water and it is a free Ravelry download. I had forgotten all about Ravelry until a couple days ago. Then I rediscovered how much time you can really lose while scanning through everything on that site. I decided I should put some of my browsing time to good use and start one of the patterns I had saved months ago.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho_3PlLOaqu-19U6HLZZJ_dKrpfGlbGWVB9idU7v4_1fX8s1PfQt2B16R1pQaa-L61gOrtGsmHINokVVSuwL0wBhwgIrcHrAtX9oFybXd0lgtHVNdTfXDF8f29nhYCCTv9_QQ70bEsaTbe/s1600/WP_20130820_010.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho_3PlLOaqu-19U6HLZZJ_dKrpfGlbGWVB9idU7v4_1fX8s1PfQt2B16R1pQaa-L61gOrtGsmHINokVVSuwL0wBhwgIrcHrAtX9oFybXd0lgtHVNdTfXDF8f29nhYCCTv9_QQ70bEsaTbe/s320/WP_20130820_010.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I really like how it is turning out so far, despite a couple ssk difficulties. :)<br />
<br />
Otherwise, I still have a few other quilts on the to-do list that have been hanging out there for.... almost forever (or for a very long time at least)!<br />
<br />
The Double Irish Chain:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2E6lG56PNknxBGIaivTxa5qWL0INk8Ijq61KYYAG5bZ78meFp8vgTjmVC1EMQUVW7ZRvRqvGgwniP8Va2NjONXK1YCqnMEZxhvKyZQFpA5sDQO2Yo1Q47gctMgXsc_6a-DASa7rDdrhRO/s1600/2011-09-05+21.00.55.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2E6lG56PNknxBGIaivTxa5qWL0INk8Ijq61KYYAG5bZ78meFp8vgTjmVC1EMQUVW7ZRvRqvGgwniP8Va2NjONXK1YCqnMEZxhvKyZQFpA5sDQO2Yo1Q47gctMgXsc_6a-DASa7rDdrhRO/s320/2011-09-05+21.00.55.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These squares have been cut for 2(!!) years now and I still haven't done anything with them. I think this one really needs to be the next one on my get-it-done list.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Fall Leaf Quilt:</div>

I still have over half of the leaves to put together for this one. Again, I have everything cut and ready to go, just need to do the sewing! I think this is number 2 on the list. :) Or maybe number 1... we'll see if I get motivated enough to work on the Double Irish Chain quilt...</div>

I have 5 out of 12 patterns done and I'm working on the 6th. So, Germany, Egypt, France, Italy and Russia are done. Mexico is in the works, and I still have to do China, Japan, India, USA, United Kingdom and Australia. I plan to border these squares out with the colors of each country's flag and then sew them up into a little travel themed quilt.This one isn't a huge rush, just a guilty pleasure project. :)</div>

Hello everyone! I've been sewing a bit each morning, so my beach quilt is coming along. I think I'm going to call it "Bits and Pieces" since it's literally made out of bits and pieces of my Over the Rainbow quilt. Here's how it looks right now:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVPAFmhe-vidAHLbYY3SpEMTD3fTv2MZca7BD4z3LgU4JolEo5Pd0WhxvqrtLWOOUBrL24u16qCHBqRHdYv5NXa-Sf6CCDOitvsZRcsXE_34ySc7yXCFNFPBJkGVWqTe4kzVr_TTPBkLRu/s1600/IMG_20130815_110547-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVPAFmhe-vidAHLbYY3SpEMTD3fTv2MZca7BD4z3LgU4JolEo5Pd0WhxvqrtLWOOUBrL24u16qCHBqRHdYv5NXa-Sf6CCDOitvsZRcsXE_34ySc7yXCFNFPBJkGVWqTe4kzVr_TTPBkLRu/s320/IMG_20130815_110547-1.jpg" width="298" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm really liking it, even though the points aren't matching up. It's too hard to get them all to be good with the horrible sewing I did on the 9-patch units 13-14 years ago. I'm just going to blame the 8th grade version of me for any mistakes or wonkiness on this quilt - I don't think she'll mind. :)<br />
<br />
It still needs to be larger. If I want to use it at the beach I'll want to lay down on it, or at least sit comfortably. So, I'm going to be adding another border, but I'm not really sure what fabric to use. I have some left over bits from the colored pieces in the middle, but I'm not sure I have enough to make it all the way around and add the inches that I want to. Maybe I'll have to add 2 more (or more???) borders on this to get it to the size that I want. Time will tell I guess...<br />
<br />
Anyway - to finish off the post, here is some cat mischief that happened in the making of this part of the quilt. Enjoy!<br />
<br />

Oh, hi Leia! Thanks for helping me keep those pieces down and in order. You're such a good helper!<br />

<br />
Wait a minute mom, these pieces need to be rearranged. The seams aren't going to match up! Let me help you...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4NZn-hc8kmv_RrPc1mpYhaZe11rQs9BKm07HoPs5vAEUMc3PRq9mZFdNTLj6trC0SCIC3T4LF0J3sZlMk8Z1dErwA1YPdlBAyNqOW6JCAbh3EH1dIufewAkPLwuqUpHob0mOg0p4hc2P5/s1600/WP_20130814_005.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4NZn-hc8kmv_RrPc1mpYhaZe11rQs9BKm07HoPs5vAEUMc3PRq9mZFdNTLj6trC0SCIC3T4LF0J3sZlMk8Z1dErwA1YPdlBAyNqOW6JCAbh3EH1dIufewAkPLwuqUpHob0mOg0p4hc2P5/s320/WP_20130814_005.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Just a few more to move and then it will be perfect!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe1Cv55CrgB4pl3U-gzjLOwom1rBSS_6wysyn8IIwqF4Si5c-RVGGWzSO6fAZgpGUrEbSr2Q1Y5wuLQUXV8NZHfIW-3ajsMvYs3SPG26ELLxu4ur7PMkD6OSTin8x4uX1UpzgfqsMiaeTJ/s1600/WP_20130814_006.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe1Cv55CrgB4pl3U-gzjLOwom1rBSS_6wysyn8IIwqF4Si5c-RVGGWzSO6fAZgpGUrEbSr2Q1Y5wuLQUXV8NZHfIW-3ajsMvYs3SPG26ELLxu4ur7PMkD6OSTin8x4uX1UpzgfqsMiaeTJ/s320/WP_20130814_006.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Whew, rearranging these rows is hard work. I'm too tired to do the rest. You'll put it back in order, right mom?<br />
<br />
Thanks for all the help, Leia! :-p</div>

Hello everyone! I'm happy that I have another post for you so soon! Since I haven't had much time for sewing or crafting over the past month and a half I think I'm compensating for it now that I have time during the day.<br />
<br />
I've been spending my mornings sewing while it's kind of cloudy and cool here. When I was unpacking my craft and quilt supplies I found the left over bits from my Over the Rainbow quilt. Basically they were a lot of strips ready to be sewn into 9-patch blocks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXiHJzvMdv8ka8N66UWLMeLWOXBMo_O9hCM8LfoqRfT4swT7_vnovO_5z4Ns6zJvE3I2HgAy6KUXA3BAUiErkgyG5BTE3wJsYqVQ-kIeQB4mtu1bHrzeU8_0BoOibcX12caX4IM6Wpdo_v/s1600/WP_20130812_009.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="228" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXiHJzvMdv8ka8N66UWLMeLWOXBMo_O9hCM8LfoqRfT4swT7_vnovO_5z4Ns6zJvE3I2HgAy6KUXA3BAUiErkgyG5BTE3wJsYqVQ-kIeQB4mtu1bHrzeU8_0BoOibcX12caX4IM6Wpdo_v/s320/WP_20130812_009.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
So, I sewed up all of those strips into these units - 54 of them. A lot of these seams were pretty off. I had sewn all of the 9-patch rows together when I was 13 and not very experienced. So, I'm not really worrying about things coming out wonky on this quilt. Actually I'm kind of liking the effect.<br />
<br />
To make things even more wonky, I decided I wasn't going to just use these as straight up 9-patch blocks. So, I cut them all into quarters diagonally.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJnil_PdsiZqXsZWMCmszBnsYBoe4cBeHeouSwdQC22F9WKMUTxUzqPysO_xOMQYyQdI2nC-IoZ7MA77pU751nv3DRDvmWfZGfU5q1QbOnWvqSRPojjHjjaIf4zTSiIo2gp0zh4vpDr8IR/s1600/WP_20130812_011.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJnil_PdsiZqXsZWMCmszBnsYBoe4cBeHeouSwdQC22F9WKMUTxUzqPysO_xOMQYyQdI2nC-IoZ7MA77pU751nv3DRDvmWfZGfU5q1QbOnWvqSRPojjHjjaIf4zTSiIo2gp0zh4vpDr8IR/s320/WP_20130812_011.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And then I grouped them so all the quarters were matched up with other colors and sewed them up into blocks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFdJKnpuqyFhSYtDVpK_hMPqs3te1wd9yYqORwkKMxtcjKOmyIIU3H0_qfTbQMP2dTKF1hBJQxzNo9q6tA76sCHhZOY2VMMRj24eVNE3nwwS80NKRH85zTB4tiJcyaUTeWzVgprqRQRUHd/s1600/WP_20130812_010.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFdJKnpuqyFhSYtDVpK_hMPqs3te1wd9yYqORwkKMxtcjKOmyIIU3H0_qfTbQMP2dTKF1hBJQxzNo9q6tA76sCHhZOY2VMMRj24eVNE3nwwS80NKRH85zTB4tiJcyaUTeWzVgprqRQRUHd/s320/WP_20130812_010.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
As you can see all of the points are kind of wonky. That's because the original seams were off, but I wasn't about to spend the time to pick out all of the seams I sewed together 14 years ago just so my corners would turn out. I'm thinking I'll be using this for a little beach blanket anyway, so it really won't matter. I'm actually liking the wonky bits of this. :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8N6HawPN1m-TdI24jyE4VGj-NvtepYfc2wJCm0MplE13QDG7r1ODpstY4ikzUVPgg6iYieYXgoUgfky435ZsOWL2slGAacUKbdSBVXSwP4QpNXL3MGu917NroaZVl4ivhitRYZo191HuS/s1600/WP_20130813_001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="218" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8N6HawPN1m-TdI24jyE4VGj-NvtepYfc2wJCm0MplE13QDG7r1ODpstY4ikzUVPgg6iYieYXgoUgfky435ZsOWL2slGAacUKbdSBVXSwP4QpNXL3MGu917NroaZVl4ivhitRYZo191HuS/s320/WP_20130813_001.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Here are all 54 blocks quartered, grouped and ready for sewing. I've got 14 of them done so far, so 40 more to go. Originally I squared up all of the 9-patch blocks up to 6 inch blocks. After sewing the quarters together to make the final block, they'll measure 5 1/4 inches square. So, finished they'll be 4 3/4 inches square. I'll have to add some borders to make it big enough for a beach blanket, but I think I'll finally use up all of these bits and pieces from my Over the Rainbow quilt. I really do love recycling! :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Hello everyone! I'll warn you now this is going to be a very picture heavy post. :) If you just want to see the little quilted mat that I made, scroll down to the very bottom.<br />
<br />
We've just about settled in to our new house in Portland. We still have to unpack some things, hang pictures, put away our clothes (and I need to reorganize my fabrics), but we're getting there! We really like the house we've rented, so here's some pictures of our new place:<br />

So, that's the tour of our house. I tried to rearrange the pictures so they were in a better order, but Blogger isn't cooperating with me right now. Oh well! So, besides the toilet paper holder that I did, I also made a little food mat for our cats.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
When we packed everything up in Madison I threw away their old food rug because it was just really old and messy and stained. I didn't like putting it into the wash because it was backed with rubber and would get all these little rubber bits into everything. Yuck! So, when I was unpacking the craft room I found my left over fish from the charity quilts I made earlier this year. I had 8 of them, so I made a little food mat. It went together in a couple hours yesterday evening.</div>

I quilted it with some relaxed wavy lines and backed it in the same rainbow fabric I used for some of the fish. I love this because I can throw it into the wash whenever I want and it will keep the indoor/outdoor carpet of the pool table room from getting dirty with cat food messes. </div>

My cat Sasha also approves of the little mat. I think she's looking for more soft food though... :) She'll just have to wait until tomorrow! </div>

So, thanks for putting up with the huge picture heavy post. Hopefully I'll get more into crafting and quilting stuff as we get situated here in Portland. I'd like to make us a light weight quilt/blanket for the beach and a beach tote bag, but those might have to wait until I get some more WIPs out of the way! Happy crafting everyone!</div>
